Origins

Founded by Berkel (Arnhem); Erected as an abbey August 1971.

History

In 1964, 13 nuns were sent by Berkel to begin the foundation of Butende, and because the name Butende means “praise” the new monastery took the name Our Lady of Praise. The founders lodged at first at the parish house, then in 1966 moved into the monastery which had taken much effort to construct and began to organize a way to earn their living: a farm and cultivation of crops. They also had a small dispensary for emergency care, since the nearest hospital was 16 km away.
Vocations came, and the Sacred Congregation for Religious authorized canonical erection as an abbey by bull July 10, 1971.
