Origins

Founded in 1293 by Wilhering near Linz and re-established in 1925 by Oelenberg. It was raised to the status of priory in 1922 and to the status of abbey in 1931.

History

1293: The monastery was founded by Cistercian monks from Wilhering (near Linz, Austria)
1699: The church and the large part of the monastery were destroyed by fire.
1763: Consecration of the new church.
1786: Suppressionof the monastery by Emperor Joseph II.
1925, 15 August: Transfer of Banz, in the diocese of Bamberg (Bavaria) to Engelszell.
1951: The General Chapter authorized the transfer of the community of Mariastern to Engelszell, which had been taking refuge at Marienveen. There was no fusion of the two communities but juxtaposition under the direction of Dom Bonaventure Diamant, abbot of Mariastern and superior ad nutum of Engelszell. The first transfer of monks took place in Oct.-Nov.
1952, November: part of the community of Mariastern made its stability.
