Origins

Founded by Consolation in 1896; Bricquebec immediately assumed paternity.

History

1896: Dom Bernard, abbot of Consolation, went to Japan on 1 January 1896, to study the possibility of making a foundation in the mission of Hakodate where he had been offered a property of 70 hectares. Jan. 6, he accepted in principle, promising to begin the following October. The local bishop undertook the construction of a small monastery for 12 monks and their superior, as well as a guesthouse for postulants and retreatants. Regular life began on 29 October 1896.
1897: It quickly became clear that Consolation would not be able to support its foundation and paternity was transferred to Bricquebec, which agreed to send Fr. Gerard as prior.
1905: Construction of the permanent monastery begins.
1925: Foundation of O.L. of the Holy Family at Shindenbaru, in the diocese of Fukuoka (Kyushu, southern Japan). This project was interrupted by the war and taken up again in Jan., 1951. 1946: 50th anniversary of foundation.
1952: Visit of the abbot general to Japan.
1953: The property of Holy Family was given to make a foundation of nuns, which began in July 1953. 1955: Dom Alexis Noda attended the General Chapter. He is the first Japanese abbot to take part. 1956: Second visit of the abbot general to Japan.
