According to tradition, founded in 534 by monks sent from Monte Cassino by St. Benedict. 200 monks were martyred there in 889 (Martyrology, August 6). It was a Benedictine monastery until 1835. Re-established by San Isidro in 1942; raised to the status of priory in 1945; raised to the status of abbey in 1948.
Histoire
534: The monastery of St. Peter of Cardeña was founded, according to tradition, during the lifetime of St. Benedict who sent monks from Monte Cassino. Nevertheless, there is no documentary evidence for this, the first historical witnesses dating to 889, when 200 monks were martyred with their abbot Stephen. All were canonized and are mentioned in the Roman Martyrology for 6 August.
1835: The monastery belonged to the Benedictine Order until 1835 when it was abandoned. Among its greatest glories is the fact that the community extended its hospitality to the national hero, El Cid, who mortal remains rest in the monastery church.
1950: solemn celebration of the restoration of the Church.
